Stroke care (magnetic resonance imaging)

It is possible to detect even the tiniest expansions of the arteries, so-called aneurisms in the head. These can be inherited but often also appear spontaneously. If an aneurism ruptures, it results in a cerebral bleed. This is accompanied by a splitting headache. In most cases this results in significant permanent neurological deficits. In many cases such a bleed can end fatally. These aneurisms can already be localised at an early stage preventatively and also treated before a potential bleed.

With people with atherogenic risk factors, constrictions (so-called stenosis) can result on a whole range of body organs. Atherogenic risk factors mainly include smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, obesity and increased cholesterol values. These risks should be preventatively treated. If this is not adequately achieved, stenosis may appear frequently in certain areas of the body.

A high-grade stenosis on the carotid artery is associated with an increased risk of strokes.

Radiation free MR angiography is a standard method for the visualisation of the skull, cerebral and carotid arteries for the early detection of circulation disorders, for example as a result of narrowed vessels. It is a gentle, non-invasive examination method that can also be used for stroke prevention.

By the way, a brain tumour or previous infarction can also be ruled out in the head of course. The detection of microangiopathy that indicates an increased brain infarction risk is also possible.
