High resolution MR mammography (magnetic resonance imaging)

Breast cancer screening in Germany mainly takes place preventatively between the age of 50 and 70. A considerable number of women however get breast cancer before they are 50 and an even greater number after they are 70. In these phases of life, mammography and mamma-sonography are also superbly suited in terms of prevention to detecting cancer already at an asymptomatic early stage.

The situation is different with women, where there is an increased genetic risk or high risk situation. With these women, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast is the examination which is by far the most likely to detect the pre-cancerous stages of breast cancer (DCIS).

The magnetic resonance imaging of the female breast takes place in a strong magnetic field without using any x-rays.

The breast is examined several times in very thin slices. For this the patient lies on their stomach and the breast is placed loosely in the troughs provided. It is not necessary to compress the breast in the process.

A very well tolerated MR contrast agent is injected into the vein during the examination that lasts about 20-30 minutes.

Afterwards, the mammary gland and axillary lymph nodes are assessed in a very complex analysis.
